Member meeting guest speaker Mary Hooper, Nov, 2024

Making Soundmarks

Mary Hooper was invited to present her work at the November CASE member meeting. She shared two of her recent sound adventures where she met and learned about now hugely diverse practice in developing sound as an art form from an international cast of participants and how artists and scientists were using sound for environmental activism. The first one was at CAMP fr in Aulus Les Bains in 2023 and the second recently in Glenshee in Scotland. She showed visual documentation of the residencies and described the concept and learning behind them and touched on the inspiring work that people are doing. Mary provided notes on her presentation as a downloadable PDF

Mary Hooper bio:
I am a multi-disciplinary visual artist working in the public sphere, healthcare and the community. I like to collaborate with professionals from different disciplines to create stimulating and challenging creative environments for testing ideas and developing practice. In 2018 I received major touring ACE Lottery Funds to create a multi venue artwork and installation as a collaborative project making work made in response to lightships and their history in key coastal locations. This led to a developing interest and experimentation in Sonic and Digital Art, supported in 2019-20 by development grants from Arts Council, Axis and a_n Information Company. I now use these skills to develop sonic landscapes, through recordings of people and place and am currently working on a proposal to create a sculptural multi-media installation at Hastings Contemporary Gallery, to showcase the oral history of Hastings Fishermen, which I have been recording for 7 years.
